Confidence is key to success in so much that we do—including building a booming direct sales business, but many struggle to summon it when needed. I know I used to. However, the good news is that by using a few helpful tips, you can become the confident person you aspire to be. They worked for me.
You are not alone if confidence doesn’t come naturally, as few are born with an unshakable self-belief. It may wax and wane throughout life, and even top leaders have “off” days. It is also said that, one of the biggest obstacles to success for women in direct selling is “lack of confidence,” an issue with a substantial impact in an industry where statistics show women predominate. But, despite the reported gender confidence gap, women don’t have the monopoly on self-doubt. We all have times when our confidence takes a knock.
Here are some confidence-boosting tips to empower you to succeed:
1 – Dress for success
Dressing for success may seem slightly obvious, but this goes far beyond just wearing smart clothes to give a good impression. Being well groomed and looking professional not only makes you look and feel more confident, but studies suggest it may actually make you more successful. However, interesting recent research has found that the color of clothing you choose could also boost your confidence and affect how you are perceived—with black coming top for confidence, and red as the runner-up. In fact, there is added significance to wearing red as, in Chinese culture, this is the color of good fortune and joy. What better way to boost your confidence?!
2 – Power pose
While dressing the part can increase your confidence, even to the extent that dressing as a superhero can make you feel invincible, thankfully there’s no need to start wearing your underpants on the outside, like Superman! Striking a heroic pose can have a similar impact on your confidence. By assuming a ‘power pose’ – standing tall, holding your head high, and putting your hands on your hips like a superhero – for as little as two minutes, you can increase your confidence and decrease your stress levels.
3 – Smile magic

Not only does the physical act of smiling release feel-good endorphins into your system, but research reports that it may make you look more approachable and trustworthy too.
4 – Visualize and practice
Another powerful secret weapon in your confidence-boosting arsenal is to imagine that you have already achieved success. Visualize every aspect of that important presentation, pitch to your next prospect, or meeting as a roaring success. You’ve nailed it and everyone’s impressed! This can be used as part of your toolkit of preparation, together with practice, practice and more practice. When you know your stuff, your confidence soars. Indeed, some say that it helps to imagine how a successful role-model of your choice might behave, and by acting as if you were that confident person, you become confident.
5- Remember how great you are
If you’re still suffering from a crisis of confidence, chances are you’re much better than you think. So it’s a good idea to remind yourself of just how great you are. Practicing self-affirmations can calm you, and boost confidence and performance. You might therefore find it useful to keep a log of your successes and remind yourself of these. You could even create a list of your top 10 triumphs and stick it on the fridge! Finally, just for good measure, look at your social media profiles, as reading your own positive PR has been shown to work wonders for your self-esteem.
